The FIFA Club World Cup is entering a bold new era. Starting in the summer of 2025, the tournament will expand to include 32 teams and will be hosted every four years, marking a significant evolution from its traditional seven-team, annual format.
What is the Club World Cup?
Previously held each December, the Club World Cup brought together the champions of each continental football federation. This included UEFA Champions League winners, as well as top clubs from South America (CONMEBOL), Asia (AFC), Africa (CAF), North America (CONCACAF), and Oceania (OFC).
Now, in its revamped form, the tournament will showcase 32 of the world’s elite soccer clubs in a World Cup-style event, promising more excitement, more drama, and far greater global reach. To maintain annual continuity, FIFA has introduced the Intercontinental Cup, which will feature the UEFA Champions League winner against a team from the intercontinental playoffs.
